Shehryar Khan of Sheraton Interiors reveals how he created a traditional-style kitchen for a country cottage, blending classic elements with contemporary comfort and efficiency.

Q: What type of property was it in and who was the project for?
A: This project was for a characterful cottage in the middle of the countryside, featuring exposed oak beams and flagstone flooring.
Q: What was the brief from the client for this project?
A: The client's main aim was to honour the heritage of the home, keeping it traditional but practical at the same time, with lots of storage and a large prep island.
Q: How did you go about meeting the brief?
A: We embraced a classic in-frame cabinetry style with a dark Studio Green by Farrow & Ball finish to ground the room and highlight original architectural features, such as the beams and stone flooring. We completed it with modern lifestyle elements such as a bi-fold bespoke bar cabinet and dual-purpose island for both prep as well as dining.
We brought in modern amenities such as the Quooker tap, LED lighting throughout the kitchen, integrated coffee machine, island with integrated power sockets, undercounter wine fridge and bespoke bar cabinet.
The kitchen provides plenty of storage both within the units as well as a dedicated plate rack for ease of everyday use.

Q: What type of cabinetry did you choose and what made it the perfect choice?
A: We used bespoke, in-frame cabinetry with solid wood doors, keeping it traditional. We paired it with Silestone Eternal Calacatta Gold Polished worktops, while the island tabletop is light natural oak stained to provide contrast to darker base cabinets.
Q: What were the particular challenges that you faced?
A: Fitting modern kitchen amenities into a home with uneven floors and historic features was key. We customised cabinetry to accommodate the existing beams and floor slopes, while also ensuring airflow for appliances. The lighting design was carefully planned to highlight features without clashing with the rustic ceiling.
Q: Are there any design elements that you’re particularly proud of?
A: The bespoke bar cabinet is a definite showstopper – it's both elegant and unexpected. The client absolutely loves it too. It’s become both a conversation piece and a practical entertainment space! And the island’s use as a prep surface and social space, complete with inbuilt power sockets, adds modern function without compromising on style.
