Jo Sangster, senior designer for Ripples London, reveals how she devised a sophisticated scheme for a couple who wanted their bathroom to be an oasis of calm.

Q: What type of property was it in and who was the project for?
A: This property is a Victorian terraced house split over 4 floors. This room was part of a larger renovation and is the master bathroom.

Q: What was the brief from the client for this project?
A: The brief was to create a calm and relaxing space with stylish but timeless finishes. We wanted high-quality products that will last the test of time.

Q: How did you go about meeting the brief?
A: Both myself and the client knew heading into the design that we wanted to use very neutral tones but ensure this had a lot of layers with texture and tones whilst not being too busy. One of the first items to be picked was the brassware in the City Bronze finish – from here we then chose the flooring and everything else fell into place.

Q: What were the particular challenges that you faced during this project?
A: One of the challenges in this room was the shape and also the door and window locations. This did help of course to dictate where items were going to be placed but also meant we wanted to ensure that whichever door you entered through you were met with a great view of the space and there were no awkward corners or tight walk through. In particular the space for the basins was very limited as the room was being built between 2 windows so there was no room for movement!

Q: What materials did you use? Did you use anything different or unusual?
A: Within the bathroom we have used City bronze for the brassware with complimentary finishes for the enclosure and towel radiators. The tiles on the floor and walls give a lovely blend of tones and light reflection.

Q: What were the different products that you and the client chose?
A: The brassware was in my favourite finish and a new favourite style wise – this range is so timeless and elegant with the dark bronze adding so much warmth and depth to a space. A quality brassware is a must and you can really feel it when you use it!

We actually went through a few alternatives for the bath but settled on steel freestanding. The shape was so elegant and simple and really worked in the space, a massive positive and selling point is the quality and durability of it being steel.

The vanity unit was bespoke made and for us this was the best choice for the space to create exactly what we wanted in terms of style, size and finishes.

The towel radiator is in an Antique brass finish. This was a good complementary match to the City Bronze – we chose this model as it was very practical for use but importantly was very pared back and elegant so would not detract from the overall design of the space.

The shower glass was a bespoke templated screen in a City bronze finish to complement the brassware – simple but effective!

Q: Are there any design elements that you’re particularly proud of?
A: The vanity unit is in a favourite finish of mine. It was fully bespoke and in the  Washed Oak finish with a quartz solid surface floating top with deep down stand and matching upstand. The slatted hit and miss style of the vanity unit adds extra texture and depth to the space being picked up with the fluting on the wall lights. The colour tones within the worktop are reflected within the tiles and the brassware has a great contrast against the off white background.

I also really love the tiling behind the bath. We wanted to use the Oasis in a herringbone format but I hate any trims and being half height we wanted to finish the tiling off properly. We settled on finishing the top with the Oasis laid horizontally and copied this detail over to the WC half height tiling - this frames and finishes the tiling without adding in a different material. We also decided to line the recess in the Rialto terrazzo finish to bring this texture and tones together.

Q: What is the client's favourite part of the finished project?
A: The client loves and flooring and the brassware and the overall feeling in the room being very calm and relaxing.
