When tasked with delivering an epic kitchen design that would do its stunning manor house surroundings justice, Emily Pickett of Kitchens by Holloways rose to the challenge.

Kitchens by Holloways has transformed the heart of this grand manor house nestled in the Kent countryside by designing a functional, well-equipped, and breathtaking kitchen for this stunning open-plan living space. With 4 Corinthian columns supporting a 7-metre-high ornamental plastered ceiling, 3 internal balconies, 6-metre-high glazed patio doors and elegant archways, the design of this kitchen demanded meticulous attention detail to ensure perfect harmony with the property’s imposing yet exquisite architectural features.

Drawing inspiration from the symmetry found throughout the space – particularly in the ceiling, entrance doors, columns and rear glazing, design consultant Emily Pickett created a kitchen that took scale and proportion into careful consideration. A stunning blend of materials and unique features, the kitchen design aimed to complement, rather than detract from, the detailing around the entrance doors, ensuring it didn’t overpower the space.

The kitchen layout was planned with consideration for the living space, ensuring that the kitchen and living room furniture related to the locations of the arched entrance doors and the fireplace, while leaving a clear space between them, mirroring the composition of the surrounding pillars.

To keep to these proportions, a relatively narrow island was opted for, featuring waterfall edges with 45-degree angled stone pieces to create visual impact, softening the island’s aesthetic and defining the area for the barstools.

The kitchen is completely unique and not based upon any previous Kitchens by Holloways designs. The tall cabinets have been finished in Farrow & Ball’s Green Smoke with a brushed and waxed brass trim detail, perfectly complemented by the fluted oak base cabinets and stunning Bianco Eclipsia worktops.

An open shelving unit made from solid brass with glass shelves, centred between the two sets of tall units creates a gallery-like feel, suited to the ambience of the room. A backdrop of glazed herringbone tiles behind the shelves adds another layer of texture and interest while keeping the overall sense of lightness.

In addition to aesthetics, functional storage solutions were integrated throughout the design to meet the client’s specific needs. A breakfast bar including pocket doors that conceal practical storage for the coffee machine, mugs, and microwave keeps the worktops clear. Deep 650mm drawers within the island maximise on the available space, as well as bespoke drawer inserts throughout.

Through careful consideration of scale, symmetry and materials, Kitchens by Holloways has created a functional and timeless family kitchen to enhance this beautiful, kitchen, living and dining area. Honouring the home’s heritage and architectural beauty while embracing modern principles, this project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a space into something truly special. Bespoke storage, sophisticated finishes and personal touches make this more than just a kitchen – it’s the new, warm, welcoming heart of the home, blending contemporary practicality with historical charm to enhance everyday family life.
